Good morning, 🫎 Neighbor!
This is What’s Up Elk, Elk County’s favorite newsletter (or, at least, I’d like to think it is!)

🎨 “PAINT AND SIP” classes have evolved over the years… the general idea is the same — it’s a creative class, usually accompanied with drinks and snacks — but the project nowadays is not always limited to painting. For example, there are two different events coming up where a wooden craft is being made.
The Brew Bank Brewing Company on Wednesday, November 20 from 7-9 PM. You will be making a 2’ snowman. The cost is $50 — that price includes the craft, pretzel bites and 1 drink ticket. You must register by November 19. (Click here.)
Wildwoods Bar & Grill on Wednesday, December 11 from 5-8 PM. You can choose to make Santa ($45) or a Snowman ($50). You must register by November 21. (Click here.)
🍣🍭 Working with candy makes everything a little bit more fun, wouldn’t you agree? The Ridgway Public Library and Lafia Liu (Ridgway’s own Asian food guru) know this, too, which is why it’s being used as a medium to teach tweens/teens how to make sushi. They’re hosting a Candy Sushi Competition at the RPL (Lafia will be teaching and judging) which will be happening on Monday, November 25 at 5 PM. All students in grades 4-12 are invited to learn the sushi-making process and test their skills using both all-candy and sweet rice sushi options. The event is FREE, but Registration is required. 🎅 It’s inevitable - we’re all going to eat a whole bunch of extra calories in the next month and a half. You know it, I know it, we all know it. What if we planned on going to an event where we burned off a few instead? I’m talking about the Third Annual Gingerbread 5K Dash Run/Walk, which is taking place on Sunday, December 15 at 1 PM.
The cost is $35 (12+) or $25. All funds raised will directly benefit the programs of St. Marys Parks and Recreation. (Click here.)

🐾 Do you ever come across a footprint in the wild that you’re curious about? You might want to head to the Elk Country Visitor Center today (Sunday, November 10) at 2 PM to hear their Con Ed staff talk about WILDLIFE TRACK IDENTIFICATION. They will go over a couple of different wildlife tracks and some tips on how to identify each one!

🖼️ Have you ever wanted to learn how to paint with watercolors? Janet VanErden will be teaching a class on the art form — this one focuses on painting florals and nature — at the St. Marys Public Library on Thursday, November 14 at 5 PM. It will last approximately 1.5 hours. Not only is the class FREE, but everything that you need for the class is included as well!

💥 Have you heard about this guy? His name is “Flash” and he’s going to be speaking at Dream View Restaurant and Event Center on Thursday, November 14 at 7:30 PM (doors open at 7 PM). During the speech — Change Does Not Occur in a Flash, which is sponsored by The Boys and Girls Club of St. Marys — he will use his uncanny ability to weave together tales of competitive sports, corporate leadership and heartwarming “change” stories. You will find that Flash’s message will resonate with athletes, students, business leaders, non-profits and mission-driven organizations alike. You can read more about him here. There will be a separate cash bar and a buffet dinner available at 5:30 PM.
Sponsorships are available, which include prioritized table seating and a signed copy of Flash’s book. Tickets for individuals are $10 (adults) and $2.00 (under 18). For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Joe Jacob by calling 814-781-1910 or emailing [email protected].

✨ I bet you didn’t know that there are benefits to creating and playing with puppets that go beyond what you normally think about. I’m saying this because I didn’t realize it either until I heard about a program that’s happening at the St. Marys Public Library on Saturday, November 16 from 10 AM - 12 PM. It’s being taught by Professor Orin James who teaches at Pitt Bradford. He will talk about how puppets are being utilized to support individuals facing mental health challenges, as well as older adults living with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

If you’re interested in going, you can pre-purchase your tickets — It’s $20 for a 20 pack of cards — from your favorite senior or one of the following people: Kelin Linnan (814-512-2771) or Tracy Crowe (814-335-0333).
